Dollar Store Flour Sack Pillows

Monday, May 20, 2013

I've needed new pillows for quite a while now. The dogs did a number on the ones I made a couple of years ago. When Debbie put out the word that she was having a fun Dollar store party I was excited, and stumped. I took a walk through the Dollar store for inspiration and then I spied the flour sack towels! Hmm, these are perfect for pillow covers thought I and  grabbed eight and got to work.

I used two flour sack towels for each pillow and made envelope closures for the back so they can be removed  to wash. So a stack of these,

Became  four new pillows, all for eight dollars.

I made two with script made from an image purchased from etsy. One plain one and one long pillow that I added a typewriter image to. I purchased this image from etsy as well.

For some reason I couldn't get the typewriter image to transfer completely, but I guess it's perfectly imperfect. Thanks to the Dollar store party I finally made new covers. Thanks Debbie!

I'll be joining these ladies this week.

  17. I would also like to make these, what dollar store would they be found at, and the striped one too? You mentioned the images you purchased on etsy, what are they called so I can look at them too...thank you so much rcahume@yahoo.ca

    1. I bought them at The Dollar Tree, but not all of them carry the flour sack towels. The striped pillow cover came fro Ikea it was on clearance so I'm not sure they still carry them. The images are from https://www.etsy.com/shop/DigitalThings.

  33. I adore flour sacks! I swear they were leftover old diapers that needed to be remarketed and came out as flour sack bar towels. I use them as cleaning cloths, and napkins and dish rags but never thought to use them as pillows... just brilliant!!!!
LOVE the transfers! Thanks for bringing this great idea to TUTORIALS TIPS AND TIDBITS!

  39. That's the beauty of visiting blogs and joining a challenge party... it gives you the push to try something new! That's the reason why I like swaps. Everything gets given away but at least it made me try a different medium or design element. Anyway, I am so anxious to try this pillows. Would you mind sharing where on etsy you found the images? The typewriter one resonates with me! Thanks a bunch and do come over to my blog for a visit.. would love to have you!!

  40. How smart, how affordable, how chic! You did a great job on these trendy favorites. Who says gorgeous has to be expensive.

  41. Good Evening Karen, This is a lovely idea and I would never have imagined that the tea towels were just a dollar. I think that is the equivalent of about 75p in England. You have made them so unique by adding the script and also the typewriter. I had to smile when I saw the typewriter, as do you know when I trained as a secretary in the 1960's this typewriter is the style I learnt to type on. It is hard to imagine that this was the piece of equipment we needed to type business letters..... aahh the memories.
Karen, I have enjoyed my visit to your blog and I have become a new follower. I look forward to getting to know you and to reading your other posts.
I would like to invite you to visit me at Ivy, Phyllis and Me! where you will be most welcome.

  47. Doggone it I was just in $tree today, wish I'd known. Looks like the fabric is a nice one for making pillows. Already hemmed on all sides. Will have to give a good look the next time I get to $tree. I've been on a cushion cover making again, so hope our $store has these towels.
Your pillows are so great, love the images you used. I'm a cheapo and always use images from The Graphics Fairs, free. Maybe I can find something close to yours. Love the longer pillow. I love making cushion covers as it's a quick project, gives satisfaction right away. Just bought some new transfers so off I go again. Your pillows are very professional looking. Enjoy
